Contraindications (When Treatment May Not Be Suitable)

Before any treatment, a full consultation will be carried out to ensure it is safe and appropriate for you. In some cases, treatment may need to be postponed, adapted, or avoided entirely.


Total Contraindications – No Treatment Until Resolved

  • Fever, contagious or infectious diseases (e.g., flu, COVID-19, conjunctivitis, impetigo)

  • Skin infections, open wounds, or contagious skin conditions in the treatment area

  • Vomiting or diarrhoea in the last 24 hours

  • First trimester of pregnancy (aromatherapy, deep massage, bamboo massage)

  • Under the influence of drugs or alcohol

  • Acute injury or recent surgery (within the last 6 weeks unless cleared by a doctor)


    Medical Contraindications – GP Consent Required

  • Cardiovascular conditions (thrombosis, phlebitis, hypertension, heart conditions)

  • Cancer (unless in remission or with medical approval)

  • Epilepsy

  • Diabetes (especially with poor circulation or neuropathy)

  • Severe osteoporosis

  • Recent fractures, severe sprains, or injuries

  • Blood disorders (haemophilia, severe anaemia)

  • Severe respiratory conditions (e.g., asthma, COPD)

  • Nervous system disorders (MS, Parkinson’s, neuropathies)


Local Contraindications – Avoid Area but Can Treat Elsewhere

  • Varicose veins (avoid direct pressure)

  • Bruises, cuts, abrasions

  • Recent scars (less than 6 months old)

  • Sunburn in the treatment area

  • Swelling or inflammation (acute stage)

  • Skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis (avoid during flare-ups)


Therapy-Specific Considerations

  • Aromatherapy – Certain essential oils are not safe during pregnancy, for children, or for those with epilepsy, high blood pressure, or certain allergies.

  • Bamboo Massage & Deep Tissue/Remedial Massage – Avoid if you have fragile skin, severe osteoporosis, or acute inflammation.

  • Reflexology – May cause uterine stimulation; avoid in unstable pregnancy or with certain medical conditions without GP consent.

  • Facials – Avoid during active skin infections, cold sores, or severe acne flare-ups.

  • Seated Acupressure & Traditional Head Massage – Avoid immediately after whiplash or neck injury without medical clearance.
